Landscaping Brings Positive Image To School

As you look around the outside of PLHS you will notice some
changes. In order to make the school look more appealing, the
district hired Erin Damme to put together a landscaping design for
different areas of the school. Erin completed the actual
planting on the east entrance of the school, while Sunrise Garden
Center completed the planting on the south side of the school. This
is a great investment for the school and it is a great way to help
students take pride in the school that they attend. “It
increases public perception and that is always a good thing.
Students can take pride in the school and it increases the
look so that there is quality on the inside and out,” said Mr.
Elliott.
The first thing done was at the east entrance of the school where they trimmed the trees. The pin oaks were over grown and disorderly. They were cut back and made to look more presentable.
The large slabs of sidewalk were starting to shift as well. They became hazardous and even caused some people to trip while trying to walk into the school. Some of the slabs were replaced and this made the sidewalk even. Plants were also placed in the flowerbeds on each side of the sidewalk. The second change that has been made can be seen at the south entrance of the school.
What use to be covered in grass, is now landscaped and has plants and trees place throughout it. Different types of plants picked out were picked out that would help to make the school look more welcoming. These plants were strategically place throughout a curved area.
When you think about how it has look in the past you will realize that though this change is small, it is a big difference. The gardens have always been very unruly and unkept. It is hard for people to care about things and work to keep them nice if it seems as through no one else cares. The advancements made to the surroundings of the school give students something to be proud of. It also causes people in the community to take notice.
There is one other earthy project going on to the west of the school. Funding has been provided for a greenhouse project. This is a great classroom extension and will be used by the science department in the school. Coinciding with the addition a botany class will be added on the academic list.
Students will be able to study horticulture and other botany related subjects. The class will help to give students better background and further their knowledge. The appearance is improving and it is really nice to have something to take pride in.
