Traveling to Leavenworth to play at Immaculata High School has been a trip all Kaw fans have been dreading because Immac is so tough and difficult to beat in their home gym. They are always hard working and play so hard and rarely ever lose at home.
But Friday night the visiting Kaws were up to the task getting a varsity, girl's and boy's sweep with the Lady Kaws knocking off a scrappy Lady Raider squad 49-44 and the Boy's team getting by Immac 62-41 in a game that was much closer than the final score would indicate.
The Lady Kaws were led in scoring by Senior Holly Fornelli's near triple double of 21 points, 8 steals and 9 rebounds, a career night for Fornelli. Katie Volle added a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds and the rest of the Kaws were balanced in their scoring with Emma Gantz with 3; Jamie Fuller 4; Katie Davis 5; Megan Elder 5.
"I thought the girls played very well, particularly in the 2nd
quarter when we scored 18 points.
Our press was very effective in that the constant pressure word
Immac down.
The 4th quarter was quite a character check for us. We squandered a
12 point lead and could have completely folded. However, the girls
really fought hard and kept their composure. IMMAC is a difficult
place to win, so I am really proud of the girls", said Coach Mark
Armstrong.
The Kaws boy's edged out to a 13-8 lead in the first quarter and held the lead for the entire game. They stretched the lead to 8 at the half and outscored the Raiders 35 to 22 in the second half.
The Kaws had a very balanced scoring attack with Kyle Morgison leading the way with 14 points and 9 assists. Shane Gimzo and Caleb Denton with 12 points a piece and Andy Bowman with 11 points and 15 rebounds in the game.
"It was a solid team effort by the kids. I am proud of their ability to stay focused and play hard through out the entire game. Our defensive effort was very good", said Coach Jeff Dickson.
The Lady Kaws travel to Oskaloosa on Tuesday and the Kaws head to Mclouth Tournament to play Mclouth at 7:45 Tuesday night.
