The Lady Kaw Softball team advanced to it's first State appearance on Tues. night by winning 2 games at Field of Dreams in Basehor. The Lady Kaws faced the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats in an exciting first game of the day.
The Kaws were down by 2 runs going into the 6th inning when Emily Huerter reached 1st base on an error. Courtney Kasson hit a double to score Huerter and Shelby Erickson dinged a home run to score Lauren Miller - the courtesy runner for Kasson - and herself.
The Kaw's defense persevered in the 7th when a Bobcat runner reached 3rd base and Kasson struck the next 2 batters out to secure the win.
After Holton and Royal Valley's game semi-final extra inning game, the stage was set for the Championship game where the Kaws were to face the Holton Wildcats. Holton has knocked PLHS out of numerous regionals to keep the Kaws at home during the State Tournament. The outcome was totally different this year.
The Lady Kaws, for the 2nd time in the Regionals, shut out their opponent beating Holton 6 - 0. Chelsea Williams hit 2 out of 4 times at the plate and added 3 RBI's. Kasson went 1 for 2, LeeAnne Pringle went 2 for 3 and added 2 RBI's.
Other Lady Kaws that added a hit were Huerter, Sandy Robbins and Daffodil Reumund. Samantha Kopp was credited with one RBI. The battery of Kasson and Pringle notched 13 strikeouts, only 6 hits and 2 runs. The Kaw defense was solid with 32 assists and 42 put outs.
Congratulations to the 2008 Lady Kaw Softball team for their notable firsts this season in achieving the first-time-ever KVL League Championship and a State berth!!! The team effort and accomplishments have been well deserved and noted!
