Mrs. Brown 1st Grade Newsletter

First grade is off to a great start!  We have had a busy and productive first week.  This is the first of many weekly newsletters that will go home on Fridays letting you know what first grade will be learning the following week.  If you have any questions throughout the year please don’t hesitate to ask.  My email address is jbrown@usd343.org.  You can also call 785-597-5156 (school) or 785-220-5136 (home).  My plan time is 1:00 to 2:00.

Language Arts

We will be working on classifying.  This is a great skill to practice at home.  Have your child group their toys or books; classify them into groups.  Some ways to classify are new/old, big/small, or mine/yours.  We will also be looking at the consonant sounds p/b, t/d, c,k/g, f/v, th/th and all vowel sounds.

Sight Words: an, is, and, it, had, at

Math

Currently we are working on number sense in math.  We are reviewing the order of numbers, greater than/ less than and matching numbers to number words (1= one).  We are also reviewing basic skills that were learned in kindergarten.  Math skills are great to practice in the car.  Count forwards and backwards together.  Give your child two numbers and have them identify which is greater or less than.

Student of the Week

We will be beginning our student of the week.  When it is your child’s turn two blank pages will be sent home with him on the Friday before his week begins.  They should be sent back on Monday.  These can be filled with pictures from home to be displayed on the bulletin board in the hallway.  An information sheet about your child will also be sent home.  Please help him complete it.  During the week your child will have a chance to eat in the classroom with a friend of his choice.  Cheyenne Brooks will be our first student of the week followed by Kayleb Brooks.
