Lecompton Elementary Connects With Local History

Julie Shaw, LES Counselor, coordinated the creation of a two-wall mural at the entrance to the Multipurpose Room. After learning about the town of Lecompton, a number of students designed pictures to connect with Lecompton history. With the assistance of a PLHS student, pencil reproductions of the students' drawings were placed on the walls. Next came all the beautiful color when many students painted the mural. If you could have seen the dedication with which they painted, you would be proud as all of us at Lecompton Elementary are. When visiting our school, please take the time to enjoy the fine mural artwork.
The key to the mural is:
EAST WALL
Lecompton was originally called Bald Eagle.
The Kansas River is represented on the East Wall.
Ferries used to cross the Kaw River.
The bison is the state animal, and the meadowlark is the state bird.
Lecompton Nature Study Site was established in 1997.
WEST WALL
Constitution Hall, built in 1856, is possibly the oldest wooden building in Kansas.
Daniel Boone's grandson, Albert (in coon skin cap), was one of the founders of Lecompton.
The streets in Lecompton are named after territorial officials and town founders:
Elmore with Constitution Hall and Whitfield, the street our school is on.
Carnival ride is from Territorial Days celebrations in Lecompton.
Turtle represents turtle races at Territorial Days celebrations.
